The Dutch crested cuckoo dwarf is a breed of chickens and roosters originating from the Netherlands. This very endearing and sociable hen stands out from other chickens thanks to its magnificent white pompom that we admire with pleasure. Its pompom comes from a growth on the skull on which the feathers have also grown. It is ideal for children because it is easily tamed.
Her huge, round and original headdress makes the Dutch girl one of the most beautiful ornamental chickens. The pompom so characteristic of this hen replaces the crest. It always has a different color than the hen’s coat. Remember to slightly cut the tips of the feathers around your Dutch girl’s eyes so that she can see well and always find her way back to the henhouse.
The Dutchwoman is a slightly eccentric hen, who also stands out for her character. Always a little late compared to the other hens, she moves in zigzags and likes to perch. It is not useful to provide too large a space in which she would get lost. The rooster is slightly possessive with his harem of hens, without any aggression towards children.
Dutch chickens are sociable and coexist very well with all other breeds of chickens, whatever their size and characteristics.
A good layer, she lays white eggs. She sometimes loses her eggs, often forgetting where she laid the previous one, which accentuates her quirky side. Furthermore, she is not very keen on brooding. It is better to give her eggs to another hen, a better mother like the Pekin or the Silkie, or to put them in an incubator and take care of the incubation and the first days of the chicks yourself.
The plumage of the Dutch Crested Cuckoo is composed of white feathers barred with black and light blue-grey. The bars are not delimited, so the plumage has an elegant blurred effect. As for the pompom, it is entirely white. The pompom of the Dutch crested cuckoo always has its base of feathers, around the eyes, of the same color as the body and the rest of the feathers are white.
